Thunder Trade Eric Maynor

Thunder Trade Eric Maynor

MaynorEric Maynor had been sitting on the bench for most of the season, in scrub back up duty. His performance this season hasn’t been up to his standard or the standard of this organization. This summer, Oklahoma City announced they were not going to offer him a contract extension and were planning waiting until the off season to negotiate his contract.

Maynor, while he spent all of the 2011-2012 season recovering from a torn ACL, just wasn’t the same. He wasn’t playing, and never saw significant minutes when we was in the game. Maynor went to Sam Presti and asked to be sent to a team where he could show his worth, and try to help a team.

Presti obliged Thursday by sending him to the Portland Trail Blazers for a trade exception. Maynor will almost automatically see minutes behind rookie Damian Lillard. Portland is struggling hard right now, losers of six straight and falling out of favor for the eighth spot in the Western Conference.

Maynor can bring life back to a bench that is considered one of the worst in the league. It’ll be an almost instant improvement there.

For Oklahoma City, a trade exception was received. Now, what’s a trade exception? It’s basically a credit. A credit that can be used in a future trade. Oklahoma City has until July 1st, 2014 to use the exception. Currently, teams over the salary cap can only trade for the worth of the player they are trading. However, with the trade exception, the Thunder now have an extra $2.5 million to spend on a trade.

This also helps with Eric Maynor’s salary to come off the books. Oklahoma City was dancing along the tax threshold, and now have stepped back a bit. Yeah, they added Ronnie Brewer from the Knicks, but Brewer is only making $1 million dollars currently. Oklahoma City saved $1.26 million in this trade.

Oklahoma City helped their cap situation AND helped Eric Maynor find a home. This was definitely a win-win for Oklahoma City.
