#10 – Perry Jones III

This one is pretty tough. Where do you place a player that you barely saw? I mean, if you went to Tulsa, saw the 66ers play, you were able to watch Perry Jones III struggle at times. Shoot volume shots, with low efficiency. When he was on the court, he never did anything of real value that left a remembering mark.

He appeared in 38 games for the Thunder and 15 games in Tulsa. He didn’t shoot well in Tulsa, 45.6 percent, and no better in Oklahoma City, 39.4 percent. So, he has plenty of room for improvement.

Jones was a gift given to Thunder fans every where when he fell to the 24th spot in the 2012 N.B.A. Draft. Rumors of a bad work habit and other things led to his slide down the ladder. Thunder, and I, felt ecstatic for getting a player of his caliber, a lottery pick, at the 24th spot. Then he missed a few games for injuries, buried in the depth chart.

He has an awkward shot, he’s not a decent free throw shooter. Oklahoma City is saying that he has a lot of potential. Thunder fans are wanting to see that potential. Something that I believe everyone needs to come to terms with is that we may never see the real potential of Jones any time soon. He’s buried in the depth chart behind Serge Ibaka and Nick Collison. Unless there is a big improvement of talent by Jones, I doubt we will see him crack any normal minutes.

What continues to get everyone hope is that last preseason he played pretty well in his minutes. Then he saw extended play in the season finale against the Milwaukee Bucks. He played 39 minutes, scored 14 points, unfortunately on 15 shots. He almost had the double-double with nine rebounds. There is a glimmer of hope on the potential.

However, I know the Thunder aren’t banking on anything with Jones. Getting him where we did in the draft was very nice. However, it’s just that. It was nice. They’re not banking on our future with his outcome of a player. If he develops and becomes a quality role player, that’s fantastic. If not, he’s just another late first round draft pick that didn’t pan out – something that’s actually very common.

Here’s a recap of the #ThunderRank to this point:
