Thunder Kicks

Odds are if you’re a die hard Oklahoma City Thunder fan, you’ve been (or attempted to be) a baller at some point in your life. Whether you played in elementary school, high school, or still trying to relive the glory days, one thing remains: you love your basketball shoes.

A good shoe is a staple to anybody who plays basketball. But the shoes now are not the same as when you were younger. Shoes are more colorful and elaborate. The design, comfort, and technology in some of today’s shoes can be mind blowing. And with LeBron James’ newest shoe expected to retail at $200… Well, shoes are getting expensive.

If you truly are Thunder obsessed (and we know you are), then you might want to pay attention to the kicks on the court this season. The two fan favorites, Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook, are major players in the NBA when it comes to shoe deals. Whether you’re in the market for a new pair of basketball shoes, or you just have a general appreciation for what’s on players’ feet, the Thunder have shoes to watch.

Kevin Durant has been signed with Nike since he entered the league. Last year his shoe was third in sales for Nike (LeBron was first; Kobe second). The KD V was a popular shoe in the Thunder locker room last season as well. Along with the ball boys, assistant coaches, and many fans, you could also see Kendrick Perkins, Nick Collison, and Jeremy Lamb rocking the V’s in games.

This season Kevin Durant will be unveiling the KD VI on the court. KD’s signature shoes are always designed keeping Durant’s personal inspirations in mind. This year’s model is inspired by Durant’s hometown and the craftsmanship of a wristwatch. Nike sums up the symbolism:

Similar to Durant’s controlled fluidity on the court, a watch operates with precise movements.  Small nuances in Durant’s style of play and the KD VI design mirror the micro details of a wristwatch.  Classic minimalism suggests less is sometimes more.

The KD VI will be KD’s first low top shoe. With a very unique tongue design and several different colorways, the VI is a shoe that will definitely stand out during the upcoming season. At one time Durant told us that he hoped for his shoes to never go over $100. Long gone are those days. This year the KD VI is retailed at $130 (with children’s sizes at $100).

If you’re willing to shill out more money, you can customize your own pair on NikeiD. Along with several different color combinations, you can even get your KD VI’s to glow in the dark! Personally, KD’s shoes have always fit very comfortable to me. While I have yet to try out the KD VI for myself, I am very trustworthy of Durant’s shoes and have loved every pair I own.

The other Thunder player whose kicks you want to watch is the fashion guru, Russell Westbrook. Russell has blown up in the fashion world as of late. What we just thought were silly shirts and big glasses have transformed Westbrook into arguably the most well respected athlete in terms of fashion. Last year Westbrook was a huge signing for Nike’s Jordan Brand. Michael Jordan actually handpicks players he wants to represent his brand, so take that for what it’s worth. Westbrook wore many different pairs of Jordans and the brand definitely catered to the absurdity that is Russell’s style.

The main shoe Westbrook sported last year was the Air Jordan 28 (a zip-up model that almost looks like a boot when fully zipped). Not to let Westbrook’s unique personality go to waste, Jordan made some crazy color ways for Russ, one of them a Thunder blue color way that sported Russell’s life motto in huge orange letters on the side, “WHY NOT?”.

Most recently the Jordan Brand previewed a new player edition shoe for Westbrook. This version of the Air Jordan 28 is shroud-less and features a camouflage design of different Thunder colors. While the wild designs are more than welcome, I think we would all like to see Russell get his own signature shoe this year.

Jordan already carries signatures for Carmelo Anthony, Blake Griffin, and Chris Paul. Russell’s dynamic style of fashion and basketball have more than earned him his own signature, and I have to believe it’s only a matter of time before we see “Westbrooks” on the shelves.

It should also be noted that both Serge Ibaka and Steven Adams have deals with Adidas. The company has given Serge some pretty cool custom shoes in the past, incorporating designs reflecting his Congo heritage. Most recently, Adidas gave us a preview of a Serge inspired color way of their Crazy 8 shoe. It will be interesting to see if Serge rocks them on the court as they don’t exactly match the Thunder’s uniforms at all. While it’s unlikely that Adams gets his own shoe anytime soon, I’m curious as to which Adidas shoe he will wear, and which color way.

So what are your thoughts on Russell and KD’s kicks? Is there a colorway of the KD VI you’re looking forward to seeing on court? Are you considering buying and/or playing in any of the mentioned shoes? If you try any of these Thunder related shoes, let your friends at Thunder Obsessed know what you think of them. We’ll be looking to update you on Thunder sneaker news during the upcoming season.
