Santa is coming soon and this Thunder fan is sharing with you what he wants from Jolly Old St. Nicholas. I realize that some of these are a stretch, but you’ve got to dream big on Christmas! Here’s my Thunder wish-list for Santa:
I’m a sucker for records. And this year, somehow, it looks as if the Thunder’s best season is up for grabs again. Last year saw Oklahoma City break 60 wins for the first time in Thunder history. That’s why this year I want 61. Forget James Harden and his beard. Forget Kevin Martin, his earrings and tiny goatee. I love me some Reggie Jackson, Jeremy Lamb, and Steven Adams. I want to see these guys help OKC to its best season yet.
At 22-5, the Thunder are on pace to do such a thing. Unfortunately, this high level that we’ve been seeing from the Thunder will be pretty hard to sustain (as seen against Toronto on Sunday). Still, this Thunder team is deep, and can perform at a high level for 82 games without wearing out key players.
Perry Jones in the Dunk Contest
I’ve pretty much given up all hope that PJ3 will get consistent minutes for the Thunder. Brooks seems to view him as a situational type player instead of an every night player. I tend to disagree as Jones has been not just effective defensively, but has been pretty darn solid on offense when given opportunities.
But enough about whining about PJ’s PT. Let’s get Jones to make a name for himself at this year’s All-Star weekend. Anyone who keeps and eye on the lay-up lines during warmups has probably seen Perry Jones throw down some nasty dunks. Jones has the ups, the length, and the fluidity in his movements to do some pretty sick stuff in this year’s Dunk Contest. Let PJ dunk. Boom Shakalaka.
Russell Westbrook getting MVP Recognition
Yes, I know. KD is our MVP by default because he’s our best player. But is anyone really more valuable to this team than Russell Westbrook? The beginning of the season gave us our nasty reminder of last year’s playoffs that this team struggles mightily without Russ on the court.
Since his return though, every single player looks better. KD gets better looks. Serge and Perk seem to play at higher levels with Westbrook around. And it’s taken a load off of Reggie Jackson’s shoulders who now is in talks for Sixth Man of the Year! I’m not even sure you can have two players on the same team in talks for MVP, but if anyone can do it, it’s the Thunder. KD is good. I can’t state that enough. But Russell is so so so valuable to this team. Let’s give him some love voters!
New Winning Music
Can we get something besides Kool and the Gang… The Black Eyed Peas… whatever the heck plays after Thunder wins at the ‘Peake? I mean really, it’s probably a bit dangerous to complain. It could be much worse I suppose.
But really, the winning anthem is so underwhelming at times. A KD 3-point buzzer beater is great. That’s why I’d rather not deal with the self-depression that follows catching yourself singing “Cel-e-brate good times, COME ON!”.
I really have no suggestions as to what should play. I’m still not sure why no one has paid this guy a million dollars to turn this into something:
A Win on Christmas
Let’s face it. The Holidays have their own obstacles. I’ve got a couple uncles who have probably watched 5 games combined in the past four years that will provide extra commentary during the game. I’ve got a grandpa that will pronounce Hasheem Thabeet’s name differently at least 3 times a quarter. I have a brother who will attempt to make a case that Steven Adams is the Thunder’s best player.
I can handle all of this. What I’m not sure I can handle is OKC losing to NYC on Christmas Day.
So Thunder, give me a Merry Christmas by defeating the Knicks in Madison Square Garden. Kevin Durant: make me forget about that ugly sweater my grandma knitted me. Russell Westbrook: slice through the lane like it’s nasty fruit cake. Serge Ibaka: give us a blocked shot that’s filthier than my strategy at “Dirty Santa”.
Real talk: A basketball game isn’t going to make or ruin my day. Time with family and friends during the Holiday Season is all I need, and I’m sure the same is true with all you Thunder fans. With that said, we wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays here at Thunder Obsessed!
