Thunder considered front runner for Caron Butler

Oklahoma City isn’t exactly a team that goes hunting on the buy out market. However, source close to Butler is telling us here at ThunderObsessed.com that the Thunder are the favorite to sign the 12-year veteran.

Butler, a 33 year old player who was just bought out by Milwaukee, is averaging 11 points per game this season. He’s averaging 15.3 PPG over his career.

When the news broke earlier today that Butler was officially bought out by the Bucks, it was considered that the Miami Heat were an obvious destination for the two-time all-star. Butler was drafted by Miami in 2002 with the 10th overall selection. He made the all-star team twice as a Washington Wizard.

Butler’s season has been a stressful one. He’s been the primary scorer on the worst team in the NBA. Averaging 15.3 points per game, he would be a nice addition to anyone’s starting line up, let alone bench rotation. However, in Oklahoma City, where would the Thunder get minutes for Butler to play? It’s considered we might seem a little less Derek Fisher and a little less Jeremy Lamb. Perry Jones III, already considered the odd man out, would basically be reduced to a garbage minute man again.

Oklahoma City sent a lot of their horses into recruiting Danny Granger, but with Granger rumored to have chosen the Los Angeles Clippers, Butler is an instant fit for the Thunder. With Miami, San Antonio is a possible destination for the veteran. Oklahoma City though, provides a lot of intriguing opportunities than with Miami.

Fisher was the last player Oklahoma City signed during the Buyout periods, they were able to go to the NBA Finals that season.

According to sources, Butler is intrigued by the thought of playing along side Kevin Durant. He would be an instant fit of the Thunder chose to go small with Kendrick Perkins out. He provides decent length and is not a bad shooter. Butler is shooting 36.1 percent from three-point range this season could also help provide some perimeter assistance that the Thunder tend to miss in key points of the game.

While the Thunder aren’t a for sure destination for Butler, they are considered the favorite at this point in the process. We’ll keep you up to date as this develops.
