Westbrook to skip FIBA World Cup

Westbrook to skip FIBA World Cup

Three knee surgeries and almost half a season lost can be physically tough on a player, even on Russell Westbrook. The past 15 months have been strenuous on Westbrook to say the least. That’s why he’s decided to withdraw his name from Team USA and rest for the upcoming season. The Thunder orgnization appreciate Westbrook’s decision to rest, I’m sure.

Adrian Wojnarowski was the one to first break the story:

Oklahoma City Thunder guard Russell Westbrook has withdrawn from USA Basketball’s roster for the World Cup in Spain this summer, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

After a season that included his third surgery on his right knee, Westbrook decided to pass on the two-month commitment that includes a July training camp, August exhibition tour and September tournament in Spain.

The FIBA World Cup is set to start at the end of August and go through September 14, just two weeks before training camp is expected tos tart. There is really no time for rest, so sitting out is good for the Westbrook and the Thunder in the long term. After looking so strong after coming back from a February 20 recovery, Westbrook’s knee would need more than just two weeks to rest

Westbrook says he is still hopeful to play in the 2016 Brazil Olympics. He’s been an intrical part of what team USA has been able to build in the 2010 World Championships and the 2012 Beijing Olympics. He averaged 8.5 points in the 2012 Beijing Olympics and 9.3 points in the 2010 World Championships, as he helped Team USA to a Gold medal in both competitions.

Training camp starts September 30 and expect Oklahoma City to start their preseason schedule about a week later.
